Liverpool's place in the European footballing elite has been built on continental succe s straddling acro s five decades at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's arrival at the club in 2015 triggered a return to their glory days in European Cup/Champions League action, and Liverpool now gear up for a third final appearance under the German manager at the end of May.

Liverpool's incredible consistency in 2022 has the club . A late Manchester City comeback victory on the final day of the Premier League season kept Liverpool from claiming a league title and a chance at what could have been a quadruple of trophies a feat never achieved before in English football.

A final appearance against Real Madrid in Paris on May 28 matched Bob Paisley's record from 1976 to 1981, as Klopp continues to chase Ervin Santana Jersey immortality.

In total, the Reds have reached 10 finals of Europe's top club competition, including the 2022 edition. Its nine previous final trips have yielded a return of six wins and three defeats.

May 28 represented Liverpool's fifth Champions League final since the competition's revamp in 1992 with an even record of two wins and two defeats ahead of their appearance in Paris where they suffered a 1-0 lo s to Real Madrid. They also appeared in five finals during the previous iteration of the competition when it was called the European Cup.

They are fourth on the most final appearances list, behind Bayern Munich (11), AC Milan (11) and Real Madrid (17).

Liverpool's record in the European Cup positioned them as the joint most succe sful club in the competition's history prior to its revamp into the Champions League in the 1992-93 season.

1976-77: Glory in Rome

Under Paisely, the Reds won their first European Cup against Bundesliga giants Boru sia Monchengladbach in the 1977 final in Rome.

Despite appearing in their first ever European Cup final they Carlton Fisk Jersey won the 1976 UEFA Cup the year before Liverpool turned in a dominant performance in the Italian capital as goals from Terry McDermott, Tommy Smith and Phil Neal secured a 3-1 win.

1977-78: Title defence at Wembley

Liverpool had a taste for European finals after succe s in Rome, with Paisley's charges powering on to the 1978 final at Wembley.

Despite the weight of pre sure, as the first English side to be defending the European Cup, Liverpool held their nerve in a dull final, as Kenny Dalglish's neat goal sealed their retention of the iconic trophy.

1980-81: Paisley treble in Paris

Rivals Nottingham Forest immediately matched Liverpool's back-to-back record, by winning the 1979 and 1980 European Cup titles, before Paisley's side returned to the final in 1981, up against European royalty Real Madrid.

Liverpool's first clash Matt Davidson Jersey with Los Blancos was billed as their toughest final under Paisley with the Spanish giants winning six titles up to that point.

Despite boasting iconic names including Jose Antonio Camacho and Santillana, Liverpool again showed their big game resolve to win it late on through Alan Kennedy's brilliant solo finish.

1983-84: Return to Rome

Joe Fagan picked up the Anfield baton from Paisley ahead of Welington Castillo Jersey the 1983-84 season and he immediately led the Reds to a league and European double.

Liverpool's return to Rome was deemed as a positive sign for Fagan, who had sat on the bench as part of Paisley's coaching staff for the 1977 final.

Fagan carefully had carefully remodeled Paisley's aging squad, with Bruce Grobbelaar, Mark Lawrenson, Craig Johnston, Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush all starting in the 1984 final.

However, it was one of Paisley old campaigners, Phil Neal, who again scored in a European Cup final as the game remained tied at 1-1 after extra time, with Kennedy memorably tucking home the winning penalty.

1984-85: Heysel tragedy

Liverpool's final European Cup final of the pre-Champions League era ended in painfully tragic circumstances following the death of 39 fans at Heysel Stadium in Bru sels.

The game was completely overshadowed by the pre-match horror in the stands, as Michel Platini's spot kick sealed a 1-0 win for Juventus, and English clubs were subsequently banned from European competitions as a result.

2004-05: The comeback to end all comebacks

After 20 years without an appearance in a major European final, aside from beating Alaves in the 2001 UEFA Cup, Rafa Bentiez's Liverpool faced Carlo Ancelotti's star Nellie Fox Jersey -studded AC Milan in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul.

Liverpool had battled their way to the final, with a gritty and controversial semifinal win over Chelsea most remembered for Luis Garcia's infamous ghost goal at Anfield.

The first 45 minutes in Istanbul followed the script, as Ancelotti's team tore Liverpool to bits to open up a 3-0 halftime lead, through Paolo Maldini and Hernan Crespo (two goals).

However, Liverpool produced arguably the greatest ever European final comeback after the break, as captain Steven Gerrard inspired his team back to 3-3 inside 90 minutes, before goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek's iconic penalty shootout heroics completed an unbelievable turnaround.

2006-07: Grudge match vs. AC Milan

Fate brought Liverpool and AC Milan back together for the 2007 final in Athens, as Benitez's charges again held off Chelsea in the last four, to set up a date with destiny.

However, Ancelotti was not about to let his chance for revenge slip by, as a composed AC Milan kept their nerve to score twice in the second half, through Italian star Filippo Inzaghi.

Despite Dirk Kuyt's late goal, there was no fightback from Liverpool in Greece, as Ancelotti held on to clinch his second title as AC Milan bo s.

2017-18: Bale at the double in Ukraine

Following their lo s to AC Milan in 2007, Liverpool opened up another drought of European finals, prior to Klopp's arrival on Merseyside.

Defeat to Sevilla in the 2016 Europa League final appeared to have sharpened the resolve of Klopp's charges, as they faced the ultimate Champions League test: Real Madrid.

Los Blancos were aiming for a fourth title in five seasons, including three-in-a-row Yonder Alonso Jersey under Zinedine Zidane, in the Ukrainian capital.

Liverpool's early promise was dented by an early injury to Mo Salah, following a clash with Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, and Zidane's experienced team quickly clicked into gear.
