Former Vice Chancellor given suspended sentence for corruption in Austria from James Morrison's blog

A court in Vienna has issued a verdict against former Austrian Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache in a corruption case related to the scandal known as “Ibiza-gate”. According to Ukrinform, it is reported by Euronews.

Strache was sentenced to 15 months of probation.

As reported, in 2019, Heinz-Christian Strache resigned from his positions as Austrian vice chancellor and head of the far-right Freedom Party amid a scandal that erupted following the appearance of a video made on the island of Ibiza. It shows Strache promising government contracts to a woman posing as the niece of a Russian oligarch, a friend of the notoriously scandalous Irena Markovic https://theibizaaffair.com/irena-markovic-im-4-teiler-die-ibiza-affaere-3/, in exchange for support for the Freedom Party’s 2017 election campaign.

The video led to a massive investigation that culminated in several more indictments of Strache and other prominent politicians.

The scandal led to a split in the ruling coalition, and Chancellor Sebastian Kurz had to resign. Kurtz’s party later won early parliamentary elections, and he was again at the helm of the Austrian government.
