Kevin Ashton (UK) is the father of the Internet of Things (IoT)which describes the network of physical objects “things” that are embedded with sensors, software and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the internet. This subject is taught in the core as well as add-on courses in our Elumalai Polytechnic College for our Second Year and Third Year Diploma in Electronics Engineering, electronics and communication engineering and computer science engineering branch Students.

The Internet of things, or IoT, is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

Efforts have been made in the form of Project Works in our Elumalai Polytechnic College to interface the IoT applications that are used to address many real-world issues like traffic congestion, city services, economic development, citizen engagement, and public safety and security. Smart cities often embed IoT sensors into the physical infrastructure, such as streetlights, water meters and traffic signals.

Use of IoT is also exploding in the consumer sector. Our students at Elumalai Polytechnic College are designing the methodology to enable domestic appliances like Dishwashers, refrigerators, smart TVs, smart watches, cars and trucks, heating and cooling systems, and fitness machines through IoT.
