Consider the Safety of an Apartment Before You Move In from Walter Baldwin's blog

There are a lot of things to consider when it is time to move into a new apartment. You will need to consider the amount of space that makes sense for you. You will need to look at the location and figure out how much time you would spend to get to work, school, and everywhere else you would like to be. And you need to look at the cost of the place and see if it is going to fit in with the amount that you can afford based on your income. Another thing that you should consider when it is time to pick out an apartment is whether it is safe or not.

Everyone wants to make sure that you pick out an apartment and a home that is in a safe area. That is just part of the process though. You also need to take a look at some of the safety and security features of the apartment itself to make sure that there will be some things that can keep you safe inside of your home. Some of the things to consider include:

# Are there some smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors around the property to keep you safe?

# Does the kitchen have a fire extinguisher that you are able to use?

# Can you clearly see the emergency exits and don’t have to guess where they are?

# Is there plenty of lighting outside of your apartment in the common areas and in the hallways?

# Do the locks on the apartment work well and do the windows latch so that someone is not able to get into the apartment?

# Did the landlord change the locks before you moved in or will they allow you to do this?

# Does it have a security system in place in case someone tries to break in?

Not all apartment communities are going to have some of the safety features in mind that you would like. Even if they are considered in a relatively safe area, you will want to make sure that a few of these other components are in place so that you can feel safe when you move into the home. Consider a different home if they can’t provide that.
