You also need to take a look at some of the safety and security features of the apartment itself to make sure that there will be some things that can keep you safe inside of your home. # Are there some smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors around the property to keep you safe?

# Does the kitchen have a fire extinguisher that you are able to use?

# Can you clearly see the emergency exits and don’t have to guess where they are?

# Is there plenty of lighting outside of your apartment in the common areas and in the hallways?

# Do the locks on the apartment work well and do the windows latch so that someone is not able to get into the apartment?

# Did the landlord change the locks before you moved in or will they allow you to do this?

# Does it have a security system in place in case someone tries to break in?

Not all apartment communities are going to have some of the safety features in mind that you would like. Even if they are considered in a relatively safe area, you will want to make sure that a few of these other components are in place so that you can feel safe when you move into the home. Consider a different home if they can’t provide that.
