Models of an apartment are going to provide you with a good sense of what it might be like to live in that apartment, but it is not the same as going into the actual unit that you are going to call your own. You need to take some time to visit the apartment and take a look around in person, rather than just relying on the pictures and hoping that you get on that will work for you. This is especially true if you plan to tour a brand new apartment or condo building. When you take the time to tour the unit that you would like to rent, you will be able to evaluate the exact layout, the placement of the doors and windows, and how close it is to the elevators and stairwells. 

If you are looking into an apartment that has been rented out in the past, being inside the apartment is going to provide you with an opportunity to detect any scents from smoke or pets that may have lived there before. You can still ask the landlord to do a special cleaning if you are worried about the space. 

It is really hard to know whether an apartment is a good one for you to enjoy or not until you have a chance to tour it in person. Make sure that the landlord is there when you do this and bring along a checklist so that you can note any problems and get them written down so you aren’t blamed for it later on.
