The existing WoW Classic realms will be automatically upgraded into the Burning Crusade expansion with the release to the Burning Crusade pre-patch on May 18. At that time players must choose on a per-character basis whether to join the Burning Crusade servers or to switch the realm to Classic Era realms, which will not move on to the next expansion buy WoTLK Gold. Cloning characters for the associated fee allows that character to play in every version.

In a thread at the WoW Classic forums, Blizzard presented their original rationale for the $35 fee. "This service--which provides players with the ability to play a second character in a different game -- is something new to us," the post reads. "Our original idea for the value of this feature was determined by the way we price various other options and services. We want those who play in Classic Era realms to feel that their decision is made with the promise that they'll be able develop relationships and guilds with other players that they can count on.

However, over the last couple of weeks we've received a large amount of feedback from our community, and we've opted to lower the price. The lower price could be able to meet our goals with the new service, while making it easier for more players to take a look at the possibility of playing characters on the Classic Era or Burning Crusade Classic realms."

This move follows years of anger from players about the $35 price price. As many users pointed out, $35 is only $5 short of the price of the entire expansion called Shadowlands. Many WoW Classic users have spent thousands of minutes playing with their character, and while a lot of players want to make the leap to Burning Crusade Classic without looking back however there are plenty of others who wish to have a foot in the doors of the first edition of WoW Classic in the event that they wish to return buy WoW WoTLK Classic Gold. For the players who were in particular there was a feeling that Blizzard held their characters hostage in exchange for a $35 ransom.
