TORONTO Teoscar Hernndez tapped the ball back to the mound, as a collective groan sounded out from the Rogers Centre crowd. The fans had been through so much already and, after the Blue Jays rallied to make things close, Toronto fell quickly against White Sox closer Craig Kimbrel in the bottom of the ninth. It was an anti-climactic conclusion to one of the club's more eventful games of the season, especially since the Blue Jays offense put forth its most valiant offensive effort of the seven-game homestand. Here are five takeaways from the Blue Jays 10-7 lo s in Thursday's series finale versus Chicago. With the game looking out of reach at 9-2, the Blue Jays attacked White Sox reliever Michael Kopech for five runs in the sixth inning. The crushing blow came on a two-run home run off the bat of Blue Jays second baseman Marcus Semien, who launched his second bomb Ed Oliver Jersey of the game into the left field seats.Ultimately it wasn't enough, but the Blue Jays had to fight for both wins of the series split against the White Sox. Manager Charlie Montoyo hopes the team can build off that determination."I'm hoping that this game gives us momentum going forward," Montoyo said. "This is the best offensive game we had in a while and it was good to see that we came back to make it a game."Semien's sixth inning Khalil Shakir Jersey bomb gave the Blue Jays a chance to win, but the second baseman got things started in the very first inning.Semien's been relatively immune to the team's offensive struggles this monthhe came into the game with a .809 OPS in August and he provided the spark Toronto needed to make things close. The30-year-old turned in his third multi-homer game of the season and finished 3-for-5on the day."That's how it starts," Montoyo said. "Somebody gets hot. Hopefully Marcus gets hot Buffalo Bills Jackets and Vladdy starts swinging the bat. Like I always say, it's contagious. So hopefully that's the beginning of the whole lineup getting hot."Scroll to ContinueFollowing a great outing against the Tigers, Ryu fell back into some old pitfalls, as his troublesome month of August continued.Ryu lasted only 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out four. The Korean lefty's season has been marked by good stretches (ERAs of 2.60, 2.64, 2.73 in April, May, and July, respectively) and bad ones (a 4.88 ERA in both June and August, before Thursday).Three home runs, including back-to-back jacks in the third, were his undoing. Ryu said his command failed him."Even one of the home runs I gave up felt like it was a weak contact," Ryu said. "But, compared to the last outing that I had, with all my pitches, I think the command was the key."Apart from Jos Berros' dud on Tuesday, the Blue Jays' rotation kept Toronto in games throughout the homestand. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, Ryu didn't have have his best stuff during a game where the offense was especially potent. In the fourth inning, it began to rain in Toronto. The Rogers Centre roof closed a bit late and the playing surface got soaked. After Toronto put one run on the board in the fifth, Sox starter Carlos Rodn asked for something to be done about the rain-soaked mound. The game was eventually delayed for a few minutes while the grounds crew raked the mound and the dome inched its way closed. On the bright side, Blue Jays center fielder George Springer ran the bases hours before Thursday's game. Springer's been out Boogie Basham Jersey since, a Grade 1 knee sprain sent him to the 10-day injured list on August 15, but ramped things up by sprinting home-to-first and first-to-third in pre-game drills."What he did today was a pretty good test," Montoyo said."He did run close to 100%, I would say. He looked pretty fast, Doug Flutie Jersey he looked comfortable and he felt good."It's been a gradual build-up for Springer, who started the week by jogging in the outfield. He's now running the bases and hitting batting practice, but the team is waiting for the 31-year-old to give the final 'Okay.'"Even more, a guy like Springer who's been around, he knows how he is," Montoyo said. "So if he tells me he's good to go, that's all I need to hear."There's no set timeline for Springer's activation, though a return at some point during the team's upcoming weekend series in Detroit is on the table.

SURPRISE, Ariz. Cactus League plays begins on Friday when the Rangers and the Royals square off at Surprise Stadium. As standard practice for the beginning of spring training, pitchers tend to not go any longer than an inning, giving the team a look at a number of players in camp. Only 13 of the 38 pitchers in camp will make the Rangers' Opening Day roster, so there's a wide range of competition from the get-go.One intriguing pitcher who has a legitimate shot Lane Johnson Jersey of earning one of the eight spots in the bullpen for Opening Day is Demarcus Evans. In my , I actually picked him to make the roster. It's still February, so everyone invited to camp is still on the roster. For now, just like every other pitcher in camp, Evans is focusing on his bullpen se sions and getting himself ready to compete."Everything's going well right now. I feel great. I'm ready to get everything started," Evans said."Right now, I'm working on not being such a predictable pitcher. I use fastballs a lot, but now I'm trying to work on being better with my offspeed pitches. That's my main focus right now being able to flip the curveball in there for a strike any time I want to."Evans is a formidable, physical presence on the mound, standing 6'4" and weighing 270 pounds. His stuff, along with other intangibles, are highly praised by Rangers manager Chris Woodward."What do you like about that guy? The story, the background he had a tough upbringing. He's a tough kid, man," Woodward said. "I got to see him last year, his stuff is off the charts. The characteristics of Dallas Goedert Jersey his pitches are elite. His fastball, his breaking ball, he throws them all for strikes, he pitches in the top of the zone. He's a newer-aged phenom. I think back in the day, they would have told him to throw the ball down and away. He just throws the ball in the top of the zone. I don't want to get too technical with it, but he's got elite stuff."In terms of his "stuff," Evans throws a mid-90's fastball with a high spin rate, paired with a sharp curveball. Evans' fastball is his bread-and-butter, but he struggled with his curveball a couple of seasons ago. Now, he's confident in his pitches going into 2020."They're feeling great. They're feeling better," Evans said. "In 2018, I went to the Fall League and I was trying to make everything like a fastball and I lost the feel of it. Now, Mike Golic Jersey I've got it back to where I can flip it in there for a strike and get it back like I had it."Evans definitely rebounded, establishing himself as a dominant reliever in the Minor League ranks. In 2019, he split time between Single-A Down East and Double-A Frisco. He pitched a total of 60 innings with a 0.90 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. His 5.9 walks-per-nine innings (BB/9) was a little alarming, but he only surrendered 23 hits throughout all of 2019, only two of which being home runs.Scroll to ContinueManager Chris Woodward has high praise not for just what he can do on the mound, but for coming out of his shell a little bit recently."He doesn't say much until you prod him a little bit. Then when you start to talk to him, Josh Sweat Jersey he's a funny kid." Woodward said. "He brings a lot of energy. He's a big kid. To me, he's like a big teddy bear that brightens up the room every time he steps in there. I think he feels a little more comfortable to let his sense of humor come out at times. The first time I talked to him, he didn't say a word. Then I said, 'Hey man, I've heard you've got a pretty good personality.' He was like, 'Oh okay, you want me to talk? Alright.' Then he wouldn't stop.""He makes everything easy," Evans said of his manager. "He'll tell you that anyone in the room has a shot to make it and that no one should feel like they're going to be left behind. Just do what you've got to do if you want to get there. I'm trying my best to do everything I can."Even if Evans doesn't make the Opening Day roster, Chris Woodward is confident that he'll be in Arlington eventually in 2020. After all, no pitching staff ever stays entirely healthy throughout the course of a season."He's got elite stuff. I really hope he hangs around a lot of our older guys, talks about the proce s about being a bullpen guy," Woodward said. "He's going to help us at some point. It's just a matter of getting around those guys Cody Allen, Jose Leclerc , Rafael Montero, Chavy Je se Chavez and getting the mindset of a reliever in the big leagues. I want him to really learn as much as he can while he's in camp and obviously compete to win a spot."For Evans, he obviously wants to make it to the show. He didn't have to say too much on how he can get there."I've just got to go out there and throw a lot of strikes," Evans said. "I've got to believe in myself and have a lot of confidence, and just go out there and do what I have to Brian Dawkins T Shirts do."
NEW YORK Picking in the Marshall Faulk Jersey first round of the MLB Draft, each team has an endle s list of talented prospects to choose from. When the Yankees were on the clock on Sunday, set to pick 20th overall, New York had no trouble making their selection, a testament to how much this organization has faith in Trey Sweeney."A 6-foot-3, left-handed hitting shortstop with power that does things easy with tools made it a pretty simple pick for us," said DamonOppenheimer,Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting.Oppenheimer, a se sing the draft in a Zoom call with reporters on Wednesday, Sony Michel Jersey added that even with several high-upside shortstops within the Yankees' farm systemnamely former first-round pick Anthony Volpethe plan was to take the best player available. That player was Sweeney, who just wrapped up his tremendous redshirt sophomore season at Eastern Illinois University, showcasing why he was viewed as one of the best collegiate hitters in this year's draft Brycen Hopkins Jersey cla s.Scroll to ContinueEven if scouting reports indicate that Sweeney doesn't nece sarily profile as a shortstop in the future, Oppenheimer is confident that the first-rounder will stick at the position. After all, the Yankees drafted him to play the position."We really see him as being able to play shortstop," Oppenheimer added. "He's smooth, he's got good hands, he runs well Jared Hocker Jersey enough, his range is good and he's got a plus arm. So realistically he has all the tools and the intangibles to be a shortstop."Volpe was picked in the first round in Coleman Shelton Jersey 2019, making Sweeney the second shortstop picked in the first round by the Yankees in the last three years. Factor in Kyle Holder (a first-rounder backs in 2015) and New York has added a trio of talented shortstops with their first-round selection in the last seven drafts.MORE:
The Philadelphia Phillies announced on Nov. 19 that they acquired catcher Garrett Stubbs from the Houston Astros in exchange for outfielder Logan Cerny, and RHP Nick Nelson and catcher Donny Sands from the New York Yankees in exchange for LHP Joel Valdez and first baseman T.J. Rumfield.Although minor, it's encouraging to see President of New York Giants Pet Gear Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski already making trades this offseason. These trades, along with the from Houston, rounds out the Phillies' 40-man roster to 39 players.Stubbs, Houston's eighth round pick in 2015, made his MLB debut with the Astros in 2019. In 51 career games with Houston, Stubbs served as their backup catcher, and batted New York Giants T Shirts .182/.238/.247. He has a career .485 OPS, six RBI, and is still looking for his first major league home run. Cerny, selected in the 10th round of this year's draft, goes to Houston with 13 minor league games under his belt, batting .200 in those appearances.Scroll to ContinueNelson, the right-hander selected in the fourth round in 2016 by the Yankees, made his MLB debut in 2020. In 22 appearances, Nelson has pitched 35 innings, collected 40 strikeouts, and James Bradberry Jersey posted a 6.43 ERA. Sands, listed as both a catcher and third baseman, has spent six seasons in Daniel Jones T Shirts New York's minor league system after being drafted in the eighth round in 2015. In 368 games in the minors, Sands has batted .268/.331/.382 with 26 home runs and 183 RBI.Philadelphia sent Valdez, a 21-year-old left-handed starter, and Rumfield, who appeared in 27 games with Clearwater and batted .250 in 2021, to New York in exchange for Nelson and Sands. It's unclear what Dombrowski's intentions are with these moves, whether they are to add depth to the minor league system (although the Phillies are not short on catching) or to be used in a trade to be made later, remains to be seen. Either way, Dombrowski has a plan for Evan Neal Jersey Philadelphia this offseason, and he is just getting started.More From SI's :

On this date in Texas Rangers history, the Rangers turned the fifth Dante Pettis Jersey triple play in franchise history. On May 20, 2009, the Rangers were in Detroit to face the Tigers. In the bottom of the fourth inning, with Rangers pitcher Matt Harrison on the hill, the Tigers Brandon Inge double to lead off the inning. After that, Ryan Raburn drew a walk to put Tigers at first base and second base. Up came a former Rangers catcher, Gerald Laird, who had played for the Rangers from 2003 Nick Bosa T Shirts -08 before joining the Tigers. Laird hit a line drive right at Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler for the first out. Then, Kinsler flipped the ball to shortstop Elvis Andrus so the Rangers could force out Inge, who failed to tag up at second base. Finally, Andrus chased down Raburn between first and second for the third out.Scroll to ContinueAt Nick Bosa Jersey the time, it was a big triple play. The Rangers were already down 1-0, and the triple play allowed them to exit the inning without giving up any runs. Then, in the top of the fifth, the Rangers tied the game with Trey Sermon Jersey a single run. But the tie was short-lived. The Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. While the Rangers tried to chip away, they still ended up losing, 5-3. The Rangers finished that season 87-75 under manager Ron Washington, finishing second in the American League West. With only a few days remaining until the 2020 MLB Draft, experts acro s the country are beginning to file their final mock drafts.Set to make the No. 28 overall selection on Wednesday, New York will have plenty Nick Dzubnar Jersey of highly-touted ballplayers on the board to choose from. With countle s talented options at their disposal, and no clear-cut favorites as is the case at the top of the first round, usually mock drafts will have different names listed for each club.In this case, however, two different MLB Draft experts made identical predictions. Both Keith Law of The Athletic and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN listed Bobby Miller a right-hander from the University of Louisville as the Yankees Larrell Murchison Jersey ' first-round selection.Miller was picked in the 38th round by the Baltimore Orioles back in 2017. The Illinois product elected to play college ball at Louisville, quickly developing into one of the powerhouse's most reliable weekend starters.Last year, in his sophomore season, Miller went 7-1 with a 3.83 ERA acro s 80 frames. Some of his best work came this spring, as the flamethrower was 2-0 in four starts with a stellar 2.31 ERA. He had struck out 34 in just 23 1/3 innings pitched.College baseball fans out there will surely recognize Miller's name from his spectacular performance in an NCAA super-regional playoff.Miller took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against East Carolina. Here's an excerpt from McDaniel and Law's respective mock drafts on why they think the 21-year-old is a good fit in the Bombers' system.Scroll to ContinuePicking Miller at Taylor Lewan Jersey No. 28 would fall in line with a first-round draft strategy New York has utilized two Rashaan Evans Jersey times in the last five years.Selecting a right-handed starter already proven at the collegiate level is exactly what the Bombers did with their first pick in 2015 (James Kaprielian) and 2017 (Clarke Schmidt). That said, right-handed pitching is already the strength of the Yankees' farm system. Per , six of the Yankees' top ten prospects are righty hurlers. That includes Schmidt and Deivi Garcia, who round out the club's top three (behind 17-year-old sensation Ja son Dominguez). In that sense, perhaps seeking out a southpaw in the first round an under-represented position within the Bombers' farm system would be better served. Then again, as noted by McDaniel in a previous piece highlighting each team's biggest needs and best fits, the Yankees tend to draft based on . If a player like Miller is still on the board at No. 28, he'll be hard to pa s up on.Miller is as the 26th rated prospect in this year's draft cla s one slot behind fellow right-hander Julio Jones T Shirts Bryce Jarvis, who the Yankees took in the 37th round of last year's draft.
The SF Giants will have catcher Joey Bart back Buddy Johnson Jersey in the lineup on Tuesday after they activated him from the 7-day concu sion injured list. Bart had been out since last week but was this weekend. To create space for Bart on the active roster, the Giants designated catcher Andrew Knapp for a signment. The Giants had Knapp to their big-league roster when Bart first went on the IL. Bart is hitting .227/.311/.399 this season with 10 home runs in 74 games. However, the former Ben Roethlisberger T Shirts second-overall pick has been a different player since returning from a mid-season demotion and made some adjustments to his swing. Since Bart returned to the Giants on July 6th, he's batting .283/.325/.478. It has been a tough road for Bart since he was drafted with the second overall pick in the 2018 draft by the Giants. After crushing his way through the lower minor leagues, Bart was prematurely forced into big-league playing time when Buster Posey opted out of Jack Lambert Jersey the 2020 season. With a big uppercut swing, Bart was overmatched by big-league pitching and struggled to put the ball in play.Scroll to ContinueWhile Bart has had moments in 2022 that looked a lot like his rookie campaign, the Georgia Tech alum has done a fantastic job making adjustments as the season continues. Most importantly, he has consistently been on the same page with his pitchers and been one of the few Giants starters who has not struggled defensively. Now back in the lineup Hines Ward Jersey for the final month of the season, Bart will look to finish the season strong.Knapp has appeared in each of the previous six MLB seasons, hitting .209/.310/.313 with 13 home runs in 873 plate appearances. Knapp has now appeared in 16 big-league games this year between stints with the Pirates, Giants, and Mariners. He has struggled mightily, though, posting a measly .128/.239/.154 triple-slash.Knapp did perform well with the SF Giants Triple- Plaxico Burress Jersey A affiliate, hitting .312/.373/.634 triple-slash with 7 walks and 23 strikeouts in 102 plate appearances and San Francisco would probably love to keep him in the organization. However, he could easily be claimed off waivers by a team trying to solidify their catching depth as the season comes to a close.
