Chloroquine is ineffective against all forms of malaria, as well as malaria in locations where the illness has become resistant to a similar drug called hydroxychloroquine.
Amebiasis is also treated with chloroquine (infection caused by amoebae).

How to take chloroquine?
Chloroquine is normally administered once a week on the same day each week to prevent malaria. Begin taking the medication two weeks before travelling to a malaria-endemic location. Take the medication for the duration of your stay as well as for at least 8 weeks after you leave the area.
To treat malaria, a single strong dose of chloroquine is frequently given, followed by lower doses over the next two days.
To treat amebiasis, a high initial dose of chloroquine is given for two days, followed by a lower dose for two to three weeks. Other drugs may be used to assist avoid infection.
Even if your symptoms resolve rapidly, take chloroquine for the whole duration of the prescription.
If you have been exposed to malaria, or if you have a fever or other signs of disease during or after a visit in a region where malaria is frequent, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
To further avoid malaria-causing mosquito bites, wear protective clothing, insect repellents, and mosquito netting around your bed.
There is no 100% effective drug for treating or preventing all forms of malaria. If you get a fever, vomit, or have diarrhoea during your therapy, contact your doctor.
